Trip dates:

25 – 31 August 2003

Boat / resort:

MV Sea Queen

Dive centre:

Cruise organised by Viajes Abando – Diver’s Lodge was the dive operation on board.

Photo-friendly?:

Not really. No decent camera table on board, one rinse tank, no charging stations.

Number of dives:

16 out of 6 days of diving.

Diving conditions:

Clear weather, but choppy seas. Currents at the Brothers Islands. Water temperature ranging from 25°C in the deepest sites to 29°C in most others. The best visibility I have ever experienced: we could see the whole wreck on the north edge of Big Brother from afar.

Comments:

Not a luxury boat, but that did not bother us too much. What we found horrible was the organisation (we were held 8 hours during the night of our arrival at the Luxor airport – i.e. a shack – waiting for other guests). On board, safety was not good and some divers came close to sticky situations in the current, while the divemaster went for fun dives with a friend. The moorings went loose in the middle of the night at Big Brother (we were woken up by the yelling and hurrying about of the crew). One guy was dragged below the keel while trying to get back on the platform in the ripping current, he surfaced safe but scared on the other side. Some novice divers in the group went happily below 50m without supervision. We were very, very lucky no one got hurt in any of these incidents.

The diving was superb, even if we did not have shark action (the warm season is no good for sharks). But this trip made me decide not to travel with Abando again.

Still shooting with my Olympus C-4040Z and its internal strobe.
