Trip dates:

30 December 2003 – 9 January 2004

Boat / resort:

Split stay at the Sunsplash Resort in Malapascua and then at the Love’s Lodge Resort (no longer open) in Moalboal, Cebu Island. Organised by Sea explorers Philippines.

Dive centre:

Sea Explorers Philippines.

Photo-friendly?:

Yes. Very.

Number of dives:

16 in total over a 9-day stay, with one day spent in transfer between the two locations:  7 dives in Malapascua in 3 days, 9 dives in Moalboal in 3.5 days of diving.

Diving conditions:

Clear most of the time, air temp quite Ok. The Christmas period is not necessarily the best for visibility around the Visayas and we had murky waters in Malapascua, somewhat better in Moalboal, especially around Pescador Island. Water temperatures around 25-26 °C. I enjoyed my 5.5 mm suit.

Comments:

We started with a stopover in Singapore, where we had a great new year’s eve party in the streets and drank champagne-flavoured beer! We stayed at a nice and very reasonable priced hotel, Albert Court, which I recommend for stopovers.

This was my first trip to the Philippines and I fell in love with the place right away, even if we did not see the thresher sharks in Malapascua, which was our main interest. We loved the service, the efficient yet easy going, flexible organisation of everything by Sea Explorers and the great friendliness of the staff. If you check the other galleries you will easily see that this destination became my favourite with lots of returns.

This was my first shoot with an upgraded Olympus C-5050Z. Still no external strobe.
